Helping You Obtain Your Desired Outcome
We are firm believers that the relationship between a parent and a child is something to be cherished. We don’t want the stress of a child custody decision to damage this relationship, which is why we work tirelessly behind the scenes so you don’t have to. With a thorough understanding of state law and over five decades of combined experience, you can trust our child support lawyers to carefully handle every detail of your unique case.
How Is Child Support Calculated in Ohio?
State law dictates that both parents are obligated to support their child until the child turns 18. In many cases, however, only the noncustodial parent actually makes payments. The custodial parent is simply presumed to spend the ordered amount directly on the child, rather than making payments.
Child support orders are calculated based on a number of different factors, including:
- Total number of children
- The gross monthly income of both parents
- The monthly cost of childcare
- The monthly cost of family group health insurance
- The monthly cost of alimony
After the support order has been established, either parent is allowed to ask the court to change the amount based on the child’s best interests.
Before making changes, the court looks at things like:
- Needs of the child
- The difference in income between households
- Other court-ordered payments
