How is child support calculated in Ohio?
State law dictates that both parents are obligated to support their child
until the child turns 18. In many cases, however, only the noncustodial
parent actually makes payments. The custodial parent is simply presumed
to spend the ordered amount directly on the child, rather than making payments.
Child support orders are calculated based on a number of different factors,
- Total number of children
- Gross monthly income of both parents
- Monthly cost of childcare
- Monthly cost of family group health insurance
- Monthly cost of alimony
After the support order has been established, either parent is allowed
to ask the court to change the amount based on the child's best interests.
Before making changes, the court looks at things like:
- Needs of the child
- Difference in income between households
- Other court-ordered payments
